Abstract

Sustainable agriculture has emerged as a critical approach to meeting the growing global demand for food while preserving natural resources and minimizing environmental impacts. Biotechnology plays a pivotal role in achieving agricultural sustainability by enhancing crop productivity, improving resistance to pests and diseases, increasing tolerance to environmental stresses, and reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Modern biotechnological tools, including genetic engineering, genome editing, marker-assisted breeding, tissue culture, and microbial biotechnology, have significantly contributed to the development of high-yielding and climate-resilient crop varieties. Additionally, the application of biofertilizers, biopesticides, and beneficial microorganisms supports soil health, nutrient cycling, and environmentally friendly farming practices. Despite these advancements, challenges such as regulatory frameworks, biosafety concerns, public acceptance, ethical issues, and unequal access to biotechnology continue to influence its widespread adoption. Continued research, innovation, and supportive agricultural policies are essential to maximize the benefits of biotechnology while ensuring environmental conservation and food security. This review examines the major biotechnological approaches that promote sustainable agriculture, highlighting their applications, benefits, challenges, and future prospects in building resilient and productive agricultural systems.
